Both sperm and embryo cryopreservation have become routine procedures in human assisted reproduction and oocyte cryopreservation is being introduced into clinical practice and is getting more and more widely used. Embryo cryopreservation has decreased the number of fresh embryo transfers and maximized the effectiveness of the IVF cycle. In this review, the basic principles, methodology, and practical experiences as well as safety and other aspects concerning slow cooling and ultrarapid cooling vitrification of human embryos and oocytes are summarized. The first successful mouse embryo cryopreservation CP was reported independently from each other by two research groups in [ 1 — 3 ].

Sperm and ova as property
Gametes sperm and egg can undergo cryopreservation freezing for long term storage. Infection screening for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV is required prior to the storage as affected sperm samples are stored separately in order to prevent contamination. Semen cryopreservation is a procedure to preserve sperm cells so a man can try and have a child later. There are different reasons for storage of semen samples. Some men who do not have sperm in an ejaculated semen sample can have sperm retrieved following a surgical collection and stored depending on the quality of the sperm. Men with a low sperm count may consider freezing and storing sperm as the sperm quality may deteriorate over time.

Egg, sperm and embryo storage limits
Egg freezing, also known as mature oocyte cryopreservation, is a method used to save women's ability to get pregnant in the future. Eggs harvested from your ovaries are frozen unfertilized and stored for later use. A frozen egg can be thawed, combined with sperm in a lab and implanted in your uterus in vitro fertilization. Your doctor can help you understand how egg freezing works, the potential risks and whether this method of fertility preservation is right for you based on your needs and reproductive history. Egg freezing might be an option if you're not ready to become pregnant now but want to try to make sure you can get pregnant later.

Cryopreservation is the process of freezing eggs, sperm or embryos to sub-zero temperatures for later use. When the eggs, sperm or embryos are needed, they are thawed and fertilized or used in a fertility treatment cycle. Eggs and embryos will be used during in procedures associated with IVF. Cryopreservation provides indefinite longevity for the cells being frozen. At the time of freezing, all biological activity is suspended until the cells are thawed.
